Nevertheless when this movie kicked off, I had 0 problems with the pacing afterwards. It might’ve been because slow pacing wasn’t something I expected from this film, or then it was just slow. I don’t have a problem with slow pacing most of the time, but here I did a bit. As I mentioned, the beginning of this movie felt pretty slow. I wasn’t too fond of the pacing in the beginning. Movies like 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange and Barry Lyndon all have amazing cinematography, and I’ve no problem at all to add Eyes Wide Shut to that list. I wasn’t too surprised though, since Kubrick movies almost everytime have incredible cinematography. The shot of the ritual, with the Red Cloak man and the blue gate shot of the house. There were a few shots that stood out to me the most. If you’ve seen Eyes Wide Shut you know exactly what i’m talking about. I loved the cinematography of this film, it was amazing. I can’t recall the name of this classical piece, but it fit the movie very well. Another great score was the one at the beginning and at the end of the film. It sounds like some sinister voice talking over a spine-chilling melody, absolutely amazing. I suggest that you watch this film and when you hear the song you’ll know. If you don’t know what i’m talking about, I don’t suggest you search it up. One song that stood out to me the most was Masked Ball by Jocelyn Pook.
It has a spine-chilling creepy feeling to it and perfectly fit the plot and atmosphere. The theme song with the piano mostly playing the one note was just amazing. Nevertheless the plot is pretty good when you give it a thought, and realise the movie is based off/inspired by a novel called Traumnovelle. I expected something more among the lines of Bill Harford becomes obsessed to going to the sex parties, not being what it actually was. Neither was the plot how I expected to be. I felt like the plot of the movie really kicked off once Bill (Tom Cruise) went to the strange sex party. The first 45 minutes of this film is pretty much Nikole Kidman and Tom Cruise at a party having fun and saving lives, or getting high at home and arguing. I think the start of this film drags on for really long. I wasn’t a huge fan of the plot to be honest, definetly not at the start. The movie itself is definitely not Kubrick’s best work, but more frankly the footstep it left in cinema, and the countless theories make it a whole lot more interesting. It has such haunting and mysterious vibes to it, I can’t even describe it to words. This film is so mysterious and I could say scary. I’m not saying I find Kubrick’s death cool, may he rest in peace, but more like the style of the film. I find it so cool how Kubrick left us a movie like Eyes Wide Shut before passing away. I’m not one to believe Illuminati theories nor do I believe this one, but you have to admit it’s still quite interesting. I’d really want to know what those 24 minutes included, especially after hearing a theory which stated that the Illuminati killed Kubrick, since the footage exposed them. Stanley was promised complete creative control over this film, so he of course refused to remove it, but due to his death six days later and WB cut the 24 minute portion and Eyes Wide Shut was released on July 16, 1996. six days before his death, and they wanted to remove 24 minutes of this film. digitally altered some of the sexually explicit scenes of this film in post-production. Instead, Eyes Wide Shut would become Kubrick’s final film, released a few weeks after his death. I’ve heard that Stanley Kubrick wanted to make Eyes Wide Shut in 1970, but was stopped by his wife who thought it might bring their marriage to jeopardy. This movie was good, but what makes it better for me are the countless conspiracies and theories this movie has caused for example of the Red Cloak guy. Eyed Wide Shut was a film I had not seen before, and just finished for the first time. If you’ve seen my other reviews you’ll know i’ve been watching/rewatching and reviewing every film directed by Stanley Kubrick. The final Stanley Kubrick film I get to take off my watchlist.
